WordStar for Windows 2.0

WordStar for Windows Mail List Starts With an "Open Address Book" Error

Introduction

WordStar for Windows Mail List starts up with the following error:

An error occured trying to open c:\wswin\maildata\wsmladd.dbf recovering with new address book C:\WINDOWS\T$xxxxxx.dbf

The filename "T$xxxxxx.dbf" will change each time WordStar Mail List is started and consists of "T$" followed by six digits and the file extension ".dbf". The destination directory (folder) will be your Windows operating system directory, usually C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT. An example of the error dialog is shown below.

Cause

Early releases of Wordstar for Windows 2.0 shipped with a bug in the WordStar for Windows Mail List files. The problem will only be seen if the program is used on a PC with a UK keyboard configuration.

Solution

There is an update for the Wordstar for windows Mail List files that corrects the error. The update is available for download using the link below:

   UK_ML.EXE - Self-extracting Zip file (275Kb)

After downloading the update file from the link above:

  1. Copy the UK_ML.EXE file into your WordStar for Windows directory (folder), usually C:\WSWIN:

  2. Backup the following files from your WordStar for Windows directory (these can be restored if there is a problem with the replacement files):

    1. CARET$.DAT
    2. CARET.DOT
    3. CARETRUN.EXE

  3. Locate the UK_ML.EXE file in your WordStar for Windows directory using Windows File Manager (or Explorer).

  4. Double-click on the UK_ML.EXE file to expand the replacement files. This will cause a DOS window to open (see the example window below).

  5. You will be asked to confirm that you want to replace the existing files. Type Y for each request to confirm that the existing file version can be overwritten. the DOS window will close after the last file has been replaced.

  6. Start Wordstar for Windows Mail List and test.
