Adding Extra WordStar for DOS Commands to WordStar for Windows - I

Introduction

WordStar for Windows offers three different keystroke sets:

1. Windows Standard commands
2. WordStar for DOS commands
3. WordStar 2000 for DOS commands

This article details how to add additional WordStar for DOS commands to those provided in the WordStar for DOS Keystroke set.

To add extra commands you need to create a macro program that gives the required function and then assign this macro to the required keyboard command.

Adding Additional CTRL+K and CTRL+Q Commands

Macro programs for five additional CTRL+K and two CTRL+Q commands that are not supported natively in WordStar for Windows have already been produced by Rich Zuris. These are all contained in a single LHA file that can be downloaded using the link below:

Installing the Macro Files

1. After downloading the CTRLK.EXE file copy it into a temporary directory (folder) on your hard disk.
   
   
2. Double-click on the CTRLK.EXE file to expand the contents of the archive. You will be asked to confirm that you want to extract the files in the archive.
   
   
3. Type Y, then press Return.
   
   
4. This will extract the seven WordStar for Windows Macro (.WMC) files into the same directory as the CTRLK.EXE file.
   
   
5. Copy the seven .WMC files into your WordStar for Windows macros directory - usually called C:\WSWIN\MACROS

Configuring the Extra Keyboard Commands

1. Start WordStar for Windows.
   
   
2. Select: Tools | Customize... | Keystrokes...
   
   
3. Ensure the Keystroke Set you want to customise is selected in the dropdown list (this will probably be the Wordstar keystroke set if you are adding these commands).
   
   
4. Ensure that the List radio button is set to Macros.
   
   
5. Click the Browse... button to open the Select a Macro dialog.
   
   
6. If necessary, change to the WordStar for Windows macros directory and select the file called CTRLKB.WMC, then click OK. The Select a Macro dialog will close.
   
   
7. Click the Add... button to open the Add Keystroke dialog.
   
   
8. Type CTRL+K, B. That is, type the WordStar command ^KB. If you make a mistake, click the Clear button and try again.
   
   
9. Click OK.
   
   
10. Repeat the steps above for the remaining macro programs, typing the relevent commands in the Add keystroke dialog as listed below:
    
    CTRLKC.WMC - Type: ^KC
    CTRLKH.WMC - Type: ^KH
    CTRLKK.WMC - Type: ^KK
    CTRLKV.WMC - Type: ^KV
    CTRLKY.WMC - Type: ^KY
    CTRLQB.WMC - Type: ^QB
    CTRLQK.WMC - Type: ^QK
    
    
11. Click the Close button on the Customize Keys dialog.
