How-To

Preface

he content of the following pages comes primarily from messages I
posted on the WordStar Internet e-mail list, along with some original material I wrote specifically for this document. To respect the privacy of other members of the list, I have tried to eliminate named references to others except where it was necessary to give credit for borrowed material. Within limited time constraints, I corrected my own and others' spelling, grammar, and factual mistakes as they appeared in the original messages; doubtless, I have missed some. Nearly all of the material in this document originated in e-mail and I have retained e-mail conventions, such as all caps and asterisks for emphasis and brackets for quotes from others' messages, in some places. Because of the informal nature of e-mail messages, I did not indicate Trademark (TM) or Registered ® after product names.

This document is not an orderly introduction to WordStar for Windows and does not cover every feature of the program. I did rearrange the messages by topic. Thus, I begin with:

Chapter Basic Procedures and General Operation

and go on to

Chapter Typography and Issues with Type
  Chapter Graphics
  Chapter Dealing with Tables
Chapter Correct Grammar and MailList for Windows

and

  Chapter Troubleshooting

The extent to which any topic is covered was determined by what questions list members asked. The first two topics," WSWin Help for Strugglers" and "WSWin Fundamentals," provide a basic introduction to the way the program works and should be read first by new users or anyone not yet comfortable with WSWin.

Most of the Typography and Issues with Type section covers the basics of using proportional type correctly and effectively. I also present suggestions and solutions for dealing with WSWin's strengths and deficiencies for setting type. The remaining sections cover program-specific issues.

If you notice factual errors or have better ideas for using WSWin effectively, please let me know. WSWin is a joy to use when you know what you're doing. I hope this document will help you become proficient!
