WORDSTAR LAN PAGE PREVIEW The Page Preview support files for LAN are stored in directories much different than those for single-user. Single-user WSSETUP copies all Preview files to the directory specified in the Add or Remove a Feature menu, and marks WS.EXE with search path 3 for all of these files. LAN WSSETUP copies the files to two different directories initially, and USRSETUP copies FONTID to each user's directory. Screen fonts (CRTs) are stored in yet another directory. Here is a breakdown of the files required for Page Preview and where WordStar expects to find them. PREVIEW.OVR WHAT: Main overlay for Preview. WHERE: Copied to directory specified in WSSETUP. PATH: DOS path in WS.EXE or CFG. CAVEATS: Since search path is DOS path, installing to a different directory in WSSETUP than default will not work. If user does not have program directory on DOS path, WordStar will run but will show a "Can't find PREVIEW.OVR" error message. PREVIEW.MSG WHAT: Menus and help text for Preview. WHERE: Copied to same directory as PREVIEW.OVR, the path specified in Add or Remove a Feature. PATH: No path setting in WS.EXE or CFG. Instead, WordStar expects to find this file in same directory as OVR. CAVEATS: Some users who get aforementioned "Can't find PREVIEW.OVR" copy the overlay to each user's home. That clears the initial error message, but upon pressing ^OP, they get "Message file not found." The OVR and MSG files *must* reside on the same directory. Keep these two files only in the program directory. FONTID.CTL WHAT: Preview configuration file. WHERE: Copied to WS\SETUP directory by WSSETUP. Copied to each user's home by USRSETUP. PATH: DOS path in WS.EXE or CFG. CAVEATS: Installer may try to run program before setting up users with USRSETUP. This will generate the error "Can't find FONTID.CTL." Installer may try to put WS\SETUP directory on the DOS path, which is wrong. If FONTID can't be found on startup, either the installer has not run USRSETUP, or the user's home is not yet on the DOS path. *.WSF WHAT: Preview screen font outlines. WHERE: Default WSFs are copied to same directory as PREVIEW.* by WSSETUP. PATH: If PREVIEW.OVR path is set for DOS path in WS.EXE or CFG, the WSF files can reside in either the same directory as PREVIEW.OVR or the user's home, or both. CAVEATS: Since the program will, by default, search the PATH for WSFs, user's can create their own screen fonts, although the installer would normally want to create screen fonts to be shared by all users. See info on DISPFONT below. *.CRT WHAT: Preview "work" files, screen font temporary bitmap files and their directories, created according to monitor configurations. WHERE: No CRTs included with program. WSSETUP creates a PREVIEW subdirectory beneath whatever directory is specified for the Preview feature. CRT directories are created in the PREVIEW directory. PATH: Default path 3, same drive as program files for Novell, drive G: for other networks. For Novell networks, this is the full path (e.g., \PUBLIC\WS\PREVIEW); for other networks, this is the ROOT directory, since a separate drive link will be established in the network software directly to this directory. CAVEATS: The LAN Installation Guide worksheet lists this directory for "Page Preview work files," which is ambiguous. The Add or Remove a Feature routine *automatically* creates a PREVIEW subdirectory beneath the selected directory. The path for the Preview feature must NOT be modified during Install. For non-Novell networks, a drive link with read-write access MUST be established to this directory. If the linked drive is not G:, then the drive letter in WSCHANGE must be modified. Search path 3 for non-Novell networks should remain as the root, e.g. "\", since the Preview drive link makes this directory the root. DELCRT.EXE WHAT: Deletes Preview "temporary" files (fonts and graphics) and subdirectories. WHERE: Copied to same directory as PREVIEW.OVR by WSSETUP. PATH: No path in WS.EXE or CFG. Instead, as an EXE file, it runs from the DOS path and prompt. CAVEATS: Must be logged to the directory that is the parent directory of the CRT directories that you wish to purge. This would be the WS\PREVIEW directory that is created by Install and is empty except for CRT directories. Will abort if any of the temp files are protected (or possibly in use). GRFPIX.EXE WHAT: Converts InSet PIX to Preview WSG. WHERE: Copied to same directory as PREVIEW.OVR by WSSETUP. PATH: No path in WS.EXE or CFG. Instead, as an EXE file, it runs from the DOS path and prompt. PREVIEW.OVR calls this program whenever a PIX tag is encountered that hasn't been converted to a WSG. Users may execute this standalone from DOS. CAVEATS: Under low memory conditions, Preview may be unable to convert the PIX to a WSG (WordStar Graphic). Try to free up more memory or convert the PIX from DOS. DISPFONT.COM WHAT: Creates Preview fonts (WSFs). Part of main program files, NOT the Preview feature. Calls DISPFONT.OVR when executed from DOS prompt. WHERE: Copied to main program directory when installing main program files. In 6.0E, will be copied also to user's home by USRSETUP. PATH: No path in WS.EXE or CFG. CAVEATS: Will NOT execute from DOS path. User MUST be logged to the directory that contains this and the OVR file. DISPFONT.OVR WHAT: Creates Preview fonts (WSFs). The OVR file is used directly by PRCHANGE, but a COM version is required for execution from DOS prompt. WHERE: Copied to same directory as DISPFONT.COM. PATH: No path in WS.EXE or CFG. CAVEATS: Must reside in same directory as FONTID.CTL when building screen fonts. PRCHANGE gives no error message when this is not the case; it simply does nothing. Installer must copy FONTID.CTL to the program directory to build screen fonts, whether from PRCHANGE or DOS, then APPEND the new font information in this copy of FONTID.CTL to every user's own FONTID. Version 6.0E will put DISPFONT OVR and COM files in each user's home directory so that individuals can create their own screen fonts without modifying other user's files. This is the WS2000 3.5 method, sacrificing disk space for ease of use. When PRCHANGE asks for the location of the "program" files during creation of screen fonts, the directory where DISPFONT and FONTID *both* reside *must* be specified. Novell Default Settings: SYS: ÃÄPUBLIC Novell program files ³ ÀÄWS Default WordStar program directory ³ ÃÄSETUP User files and USRSETUP.BAT ³ ³ ÀÄINSET InSet files copied by USRSETUP ³ ÃÄOPTIONS InSet, PCO, MailList, TelMerge, PF ³ ÃÄCONVERT Star Exchange ³ ÀÄPREVIEW For CRTs, initially *empty* ³ ÀÄ04640582.CRT Sample CRT directory to show location ÃÄHOME Sample home directory structure ³ ÃÄRICHZ ³ ³ ÀÄWS Home WS directory, contains FONTID... ³ ÃÄGILLES ³ ³ ÀÄWS ...WSSHORT, WSSTYLE, other user files The default drive for Novell installation is to map F: to SYS:; therefore the default path for CRT files is F:\PUBLIC\WS\PREVIEW, since Novell normally shows the *entire* path from the root for all mapped drives. (Late versions of Novell allow SUBST-like shorter paths, but few people use this "fake root" feature.) All Other Networks: C:\ ÃÄAPPS Network drive D: linked to this ³ ÀÄWS Appears to network users as D:\WS ³ ÃÄSETUP Appears on network as D:\WS\SETUP ³ ³ ÀÄINSET ³ ÃÄOPTIONS ³ ÃÄCONVERT ³ ÀÄPREVIEW Network drive G: linked to this ³ ÀÄ04640582.CRT Appears to network as G:\04640582.CRT ÃÄHOME ³ ÃÄRICHZ User RICHZ links E: to this ³ ³ ÀÄWS Appears to user RICHZ as E:\WS ³ ÃÄGILLES User GILLES links E: to this ³ ³ ÀÄWS Appears to user GILLES as E:\WS Drive D: is the default network drive that is linked to the parent of the WS directory. Drive G: is the default network drive for CRTs, and must be changed in WSCHANGE if the user must link a drive other than G: to the WS\PREVIEW directory. The default drive and path in WSCHANGE for CRTs is therefore G:\. The directory APPS does NOT exist on every network. In fact, few networks other than 3Com 3+ and IBM PC LAN create an APPS directory. Nevertheless, we recommend that such a directory be created and a network drive letter be linked to it. If users do not have home directories, one must be created and linked to a network drive for each user and a WS subdirectory must be created before running USRSETUP. Never reference WordStar files according to the physical drive letter on the server computer. Install the program and modify the DOS path according to the network (linked) drives. (This is not a problem under Novell, because Novell does not allow direct DOS access to server drives.)
