The Hewlett-Packard (HP) OmniBook 300 ships with Microsoft Word 2.0c for Windows preinstalled on Flash read-only memory (ROM). The OmniBook, however, does not contain the full retail version of Microsoft Word. Each OmniBook 300 owner is licensed to use the full releases of the product. The WordStar import filters are not part of the pre-installed product.

Provides a list of file formats supported by Microsoft Word 6.0. Some of these file converters are built into Word 6.0, others need supplimental converters - this is the case for WordStar file import/export:
Supported WordStar for DOS formats are: WordStar 3.3, 3.45, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, and 7.0. There is no support for WordStar 2000 for DOS, or for WordStar for Windows files.
To read or save WordStar files you need to install the WordStar file converter, WORDSTAR.CNV, which supports both Import and Export or WordStar files. See the conversions FAQ for more details on using this filter and for download sites.

Microsoft Word 6.0 was supplied with a coupon for up to five free floppy disks including 3.5"and 5.25"installation floppies in place of the CD version of the program and for a supplimental file conversion filter floppy disk.
To enable conversion of WordStar files the WordStar filter from the supplimental converters disk is required as this wasn't included with the main product. It's unlikely that Microsoft would honour the coupon nowadays, but the filter is still available for download. For full details about the filter, including download sites and its use, see the conversions FAQ.
[Request Article] | [Read on-line]
This article lists whether file converters for Microsoft Word 6.0 are installed in the shared converter directory (folder): C:\Windows\Msapps\Textconv; or in the Word directory itself. The difference in placement is down to whether the converter is shared amongst the Microsoft programs (the ...Textconv directory) or is used only by Word. The converter for WordStar files is specific to Word 6.0 and so goes into the Word 6.0 program directory, which varies depending on whether Word 6.0 is installed as part of Microsoft Office or as a separately purchased product.
The WordStar file converter can read the following WordStar formats: WordStar 3.3, 3.45, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, and 7.0. The converter wasn't supplied with Word 6.0 and had to be ordered seperately (see 105321) but it is available for download. For full details about the filter, including download sites and its use, see the conversions FAQ.

The Microsoft Word 6.0 file converter for WordStar files is the best version Microsoft supplied, being far superior to Microsoft's in-house written converters for use with Word for Windows 95 and later. However, the converter isn't perfect: this article lists the main areas where the conversion isn't complete. If you need to convert WordStar documents to Microsoft Word 6.0 format this document is worth reading. The converter wasn't supplied with Micrsoft Word 6.0, having to be ordered seperately. For more details about the filter, including download sites and its use, see the conversions FAQ.

This coupon is the same as that detailed in article 105321 with the exception that Microsoft started charging a hadling fee of $5.00 per disk set.

This article outlines why documents converted from one format to another, even an earlier version of Microsoft Word, loose any password protection. The basic cause is because Microsoft Word converts all files to Rich Text Format (RTF) first, and from there to the foreign file format. The RTF specification doesn't support password retention.

If Norton Desktop version 3.0 for Windows is installed, Word versions 2.x and 6.0 for Windows may save documents in an incorrect foreign file format. For example, if you specify the WordPerfect 5.1 format in Word's File Save As dialog box, Word may actually save the file to the WordStar file format or another undesired format.
The problem is due to Norton Desktop adds new FileOpen, FileSave, and FileSaveAs macros. These cause the file conversions filters to be listed in the wrong order when they are called by the program, causing the wrong filter to be used. Norton issued an update file called NDW3UP.EXE - this may be available on Symantec's Web site. The article also gives other solutions to this problem.

This article lists the versions of WordStar files that can be opened in different versions of Microsoft Word:
| Word 2.0: | WordStar 3.3, 3.5, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5 |
| Word 6.0: | WordStar 3.3, 3.5, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0 |
| Word 7.0: | WordStar 3.3, 3.5, 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0 |
| WordStar for Windows 1.0, 2.0 |
Whilst Word 2.0 didn't support WordStar 6.0 and 7.0 files it can generally open them as the file formats for these versions only expanded on that of version 5.0.
The article also lists many of WordStar 7.0's features, which makes this interesting reading in itself.

When using a workstation installation of Word on a Novell network, you may receive a "Cannot open file" error message when trying to save a Word document as any format for which Word uses an external converter, which includes the WordStar converter. This error occurs if the MS-DOS TEMP variable is set to either the true root directory of a Novell server volume or to a mapped root. The article says that you should change the setting of TEMP to point to any location that isn't in the root directory to overcome this problem.

After you opening a WordStar document in Word 6.0 for Windows, linedraw characters appear as ASCII character codes +, =, and |, and not as ANSI extended character codes or original linedraw characters. This is because the WordStar converter for Word doesn't support the linedraw characters.

When using the BatchConversion macro supplied with Microsoft Word 6.0, the files may be converted to Text Only and may display incorrect characters. This can happen if the file is in plain text with formatting tags (like WordStar files are), or if the file extension doesn't match the default for that file type. Word stores its converter information in winword6.ini, so check that the required filter is listed here and that either the file extension of the WordStar file matches that listed for the converter or change the converter's default extension to match the WordStar files to be converted. The only fail safe way to convert a batch of files is by setting the Confirm Conversions option on the File Open dialog and converting the files one at a time.

Numbering and outline numbering is converted to plain text and indents are retained with tabs; other formatting is not retained. When Microsoft Word 97 saves a file to a non-Word 97 format it is first converted to Microsoft Rich text Format (RTF). RTF doesn't support password retention and so any passwords will be lost in the saved file. Word 97 will warn that this will happen if the file export goes ahead.

This article lists the additional file converters in the Microsoft Office Converter Pack. These were not included with Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0, 7.0 (95), Word 97 for Windows, and Word 2000. The Converter pack contains versions of file converters for all the above versions of Word and is a hefty download. However, the two diffecetnt WordStar converters concerned can be downloaded seperately, so unless you need all or most of the other converters you can save time by just downloading the ones you need. Download instructions and the use of the filters are on the Conversions FAQ page - The filter for Word 6.0 is different from that needed by Word 7.0 (95), Word 97 and Word 2000.

This Application Has Violated System Integrity
The error occurs when the system attempts to use expanded memory for WordStar within Windows. Creating a Program Information File (PIF) that doesn't use expanded (EMS) memory doesn't prevent the error. There are patch details for this problem for WordStar 2000 version 3.5 release A, B, and C contained in the text file EMSOFF.35C, the patch disables WordStar 2000's use of expanded memory. Recommended installation sequence of the WordStar for Windows (1.0?) package, which included Bitstream Facelift and Correct Grammar for Windows is:
* Install WordStar for Windows
* Install Bitstream Facelift
* Install Correct Grammar for Windows
When you first start WordStar with Windows 3.1, you may receive the following message:
The printer driver used to create this document is not currently installed. Do you want to select another printer?
This happens because the WordStar templates were created using a different version of Bitstream Facelift. To correct the problem and prevent it from recurring, you need to load the templates, accepting the error message, and then to resave the templates using the default printer driver.
