Introduction
WordStar for Windows Mail List Starts With a Creating Index Error Message
Cause
During a reinstallation, perhaps of Windows, the Wordstar for Windows Mail List initialisation file (wsml.ini) has been lost or corrupted.
Solution
Check for the existence of a file called wsml.ini in your C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT directory, as appropriate.
If the file is missing, either:
- reinstall WordStar for Windows Mail List,
- copy a backup copy of the wsml.ini file into the Windows directory,
- create a new default wsml.ini file using Windows Notepad.
To create a new wsml.ini file using Windows Notepad:
- Start Windows Notepad program from the Accessories Group in Windows 3.x, or from the Start, Programs, Accessories menu in later versions of Windows.
- Enter the text below:

User3Name=USER3 - Save the file in the C:\WINDOWS directory (for Windows 3.x/9x/Me/XP home) or the C:\WINNT directory (for Windows NT/2000/XP Professional) with the name wsml.ini
Note: The Date Format line can be set to the following values
- for US MM/DD/YY
- for UK/International DD/MM/YY
- for German DD.MM.YY
- for Italian DD-MM-YY formats
You can modify any of these later from the WordStar for Windows Mail List, Edit, Preferences menu.
If you have changed any of the User Names or Sublist names in the Edit Preferences menu of WordStar for Windows Mail List you can modify these values in the ini file settings above or through the Edit, Preferences menu.
The LastDbfName given above is the default.
