To insert a page number in your document

  1. Place the insertion point (cursor) on the first page that should have a page number.
  2. If you want the page number on the top of the page, choose Header from the Insert menu. If you want the page number to appear on the bottom of the page, choose Footer from the Insert menu.
  3. Choose Auto Number from the Insert menu. The Auto Number dialog box appears.
  4. Select Page as the numbering style from the Number Style list.

NOTE: Do not put an X in the "Reset starting with" box!

  5. Click OK.

TIP: The Page Number command in WSWin 2.0 automates the entire process of inserting page numbers! Use it if you have not yet created a header or footer on the page. The Page Number command appears at the bottom of the Insert menu.

NOTE: If you want the page number to start with a number that is different from the actual page number, you must insert an auto number reset tag in your document OUTSIDE OF THE HEADER OR FOOTER FRAME. See below for details.

To change the starting, or current, page number (Auto Number Reset)

  1. If you have not already inserted page numbering in your document, use the steps above.
  2. Place the cursor on the page where the numbering change should begin.

NOTE: The cursor should be on the page frame itself (where the text or "body" of the document is placed), not within the header or footer frame.

  3. Choose Auto Number from the Insert menu. The Auto Number dialog box appears.
  4. Select Page as the numbering style from the Number Style list.
  5. Click in the box to the left of Reset starting with to place an X there.
  6. Type the page number you want this page to have. Click OK. All pages after the one you tag will be numbered in sequence with the new number you entered.

TIP: To keep the auto number reset tag on the proper page, you can place it in a small text frame in the margin. This is useful if you know you'll be re-editing the document extensively.
